Tohoku and Sony develop first 100W blue-violet ultra-fast pulsed semiconductor laser
Professor Hiroyuki Yokoyama of Tohoku University’s New Industry Creation Hatchery Center (NICHe) and Sony Corp’s Advanced Materials Laboratories in Japan have jointly developed a blue-violet indium gallium nitride (InGaN)-based ultra-fast pulsed semiconductor laser with peak output that is 100 times that of the highest output for existing conventional blue-violet pulse semiconductor lasers (Appl. Phys. Lett. vol 97, issue 2, 021101).

TOPTICA is awarded 5 Mio € Contract by ESO for Sodium Guide Star Facility
The Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) at Paranal, Chile, will be equipped with four cw high power Laser Guide Stars on the basis of amplified and frequency-doubled diode laser systems. Narrow band and diffraction-limited laser light sources of more than 20 W exactly on Sodium resonance at 589 nm start a new phase at the European Southern Observatory. Against strong international competitors, TOPTICA won now the final development and supply contract which foresees a deployment of the lasers at the telescope in Sept 2013.

Osram Opto-Semiconductors of Regensburg, Germany has reported ‘true green’ (520–570nm) laser diodes (LDs) on traditional c-plane free-standing gallium nitride (GaN) substrates [Adrian Avramescu et al, Appl. Phys. Express, vol3, p061003, 2010]. The researchers achieved continuous-wave (cw) 524nm laser emissions with output power of 50mW and wall-plug efficiencies as high as 2.3%. Pulsed-mode operation allowed even longer wavelengths of 531.7nm to be produced.

Laser technology developer Applied Energetics Inc. said Wednesday it received an additional $1.8 million in funding for a contract with the U.S. Army to develop laser guided energy technology.
The award has a ceiling value of $13.4 million over a period of three years. The additional funding brings the total contract value to $4.9 million, the company said.
Applied Energetics said it expects to receive funding for the project incrementally.
The company developed the laser guided energy technology in 2002. It involves using a laser to guide a high-voltage electric charge against a target.
The project was commissioned by the Army's Research, Development and Engineering Command.

Corning believes that its new G-2000 green laser demonstrates the industry's highest commercially available performance in terms of optical power, efficiency and bandwidth. Coherent Inc. has opened a new CO2 laser applications laboratory in Beijing, China. This facility will give customers in the rapidly growing Chinese materials processing and microelectronics markets the ability to get quick feedback on the suitability of their specific application for CO2 laser processing. This applications laboratory is able to process a wide variety of laser/material interactions with up to 400 watts of laser power, and as it adds higher power levels it will be able to address a broader selection of applications.
